Home Assistance Program Participates in NCJW's Annual Back 2 School Store

August 1st, 2016

On Sunday, July 31st Home Assistance Program (HAP) children and families participated in the National Council of Jewish Women's Essex County chapter's (NCJW/Essex) annual Back 2 School Store at B'Nai Shalom synagogue in West Orange.

Accompanied by a volunteer personal shopper, each child was escorted throughout the department-store-like space to select pants, shirts, sneakers, hats, gloves, undergarments, a winter jacket, and a backpack in their favorite colors and styles. Each child also received school supplies as well as personal care items. All of the merchandise was brand new and purchased by NCJW/Essex.

While the children shopped, parents and caregivers browsed the Gaelen Family Resource Center to pick up health and social service information from various exhibitors, receive routine health screenings, and access mobile medical support.

The Arc of Essex County's HAP program provides services to families whose child and/or parent has an intellectual or developmental disability and are considered to be low income. This program provides supports in the areas of transportation, community resources, housing, navigating school systems, recreation, and at times skill trainings. The goal is to assist parents and families in becoming more self-sufficient, economically and personally, to maintain the family unit, and to attain independence.

The Arc of Essex County would like to thank NCJW/Essex for their continued generosity and support of our HAP families.
