Does Your Child Turn 21 After July 1?

April 22nd, 2019

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is a federal law that requires schools to serve the educational needs of eligible students with disabilities.  Under this law, students with specific disabilities are provided free public education until the age of 21.  This means if your loved one turns 21 after July 1, they can remain in the school system for an additional year.

If you’d like to speak with someone who can provide further information about entitlements resulting from IDEA or how to begin your transition to Adult Services, contact Melissa Soules at  To continue receiving services in your school district, contact your district’s child study team.
