Employee Spotlight: Kawana Johnson
September 10th, 2021
There are plenty of things that Kawana Johnson enjoys about her job supporting residents in The Arc of Essex County’s Linden Apartment. “I love knowing I’ve been helpful to them,” she says. “When they yell out my name and smile, it makes me feel good, knowing they’re happy.”
But the best part has been having the flexibility that allows her to be there for her family when they need her. A single mother of two who has been with The Arc since 2015, Kawana was able to switch her hours to the overnight shift so that she could accommodate her son’s elementary school schedule. “It’s always been me taking care of the kids,” she says. “Being at The Arc has given me flexibility, so I can pick them up, help with homework, and be there for them. It’s been a blessing.”
Kawana spends her days helping residents with their routines, assisting them with tasks such as laundry, dishes, and gardening. Much like parenting, she says the job requires patience and a passion for helping people. “It’s just like taking care of your own family.”
