From July 27th-29th, thirteen of The Arc of Essex County’s Hotel Respite Program participants and nine staff members had a weekend packed with exciting activities thanks to the Wallerstein Foundation for Geriatric Life Improvement.

On Friday night, everyone gathered for dinner at Olive Garden in Livingston, NJ before heading to their rooms for the night at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Parsippany. The next morning they enjoyed a delicious breakfast at the hotel and ventured to a craft fair at Kean University in Union. The fun didn’t stop there as the group went bowling at Linden Lanes, and then went shopping at Walmart and swimming in the hotel pool. After the fun-filled day, everyone enjoyed pizza for dinner to top off another great weekend.

The Arc of Essex County's Hotel Overnight Respite program is hosted for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities one weekend per month.  Extending from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon, consumers are given flexible choices of community and hotel based activities to fill their weekend.  During this time, families are able to take time to relax, recharge, and manage family life.

The Arc’s Overnight Hotel Respite program’s staff is amazing. They provide my son with excellent care, and attend to his particular needs. I am struck by how much the staff care for the men and women under their supervision. I am also grateful for the program because it provides me with much needed downtime. I am a single mom, and I work full-time; caring for an adult with extensive special needs is also a full-time job. I truly value the few days the program gives me to run errands and to take a little time for myself.” - Daisy J.
