The Arc of Essex County offers a variety of recreational activities, classes and experiences for adults year round. All programs are designed to encourage participants to make new friends, learn new skills and reinforce existing skills while having fun.

Community Recreation

Community recreation allows consumers to choose activities based on The Arc’s quarterly recreation catalog. Regularly scheduled classes include “Exercise & Nutrition” and an “Introduction to Computers and iPads”. Trips are planned to the movies, bowling, plays, shows and restaurants. In addition, The Arc of Essex County hosts seasonal activities that include pumpkin picking, holiday brunches, summer barbeques and ice cream sundae parties.

Camp Hope

The Adult Camping Experience – ACE’s is a “camp within a camp” located at Camp Hope in East Hanover. The ACE’s program is an opportunity for adults to participate in a summer day camp experience. Camp operates Monday through Friday, 9 am to 3 pm, for five weeks starting in July. Adult campers personally choose what they would like to participate in for their weekly experience. Camp Hope’s activities are designed to strengthen campers physically and to provide independence, confidence and fun in a safe, nurturing and healthy environment.  Since 1956, The Arc’s goal has been to make each day at camp exciting and successful. Supervised swimming in the camp’s new zero-entry in-ground pool is a favorite daily activity along with outdoor activities including modified sports, arts & crafts, music, dancing and singing.  A subspecialty for the ACE’s Program is an introduction to the world of adult services. This service is available to recent high school graduates and may include trips to visit The Arc of Essex County's day programs.

Travel Club

The Travel Club offers participants the opportunity to experience an independent adult vacation. Trips are planned and organized by The Arc and provide individuals with the support needed to have fun while traveling to a variety of destinations. Staff accompanies the group and provides the necessary assistance to ensure safety while helping to maximize the participant’s independence. Previous destinations have included Graceland, Disney World, Dollywood, Bahamas and Caribbean Cruises.
