The Washington residence is a lovely home in a quiet Montclair neighborhood. Each of the six men living in this home contributes his own unique skills and personality to the group, adding warmth, life, and excitement to the program.  A number of the residents came to The Arc of Essex County with relatively few self-care skills. In response, the men each selected skills that they wanted to learn.  Working closely with their caring staff, they enjoy demonstrating their growing independence in areas such as preparing small meals, doing their own laundry, and shaving themselves.  They enjoy working on their own recreational interests, as well as spending time as a group.  The residents love accessing the community’s many recreational opportunities such as bowling, miniature golf, movies, museums, picnics in the park and local restaurants.  The men enjoy barbeques and being outdoors when the weather permits.  When they hear about a good party, they are off to join in the festivities.  And, when birthdays come, of course they love to celebrate together with a special meal and a birthday cake.
