The Arc of Essex County provides recreational programs for children year round. During the summer, a swim program is held at The Arc’s camp facility in East Hanover for children who want to enhance their swimming ability. During the year, The Arc holds dances and recreational events that encourage socialization and good times.
The individual recreation programs run by The Arc of Essex County are tailored to specific age groups to provide children with opportunities to interact with their peers. These age groupings enable The Arc to gear programs to meet the developmental and social needs of all involved. Outlined below are some examples of programing offered for each age group:
Young Achievers Programs for children ages 3 – 8: Programs for our youngest participants focus on small activities with parent involvement or participation. These programs provide an introduction to recreation programs with The Arc.
Young Achievers Programs for children ages 7 – 12: Programs for children in this age category focus on socialization and having fun. Often, children attending these programs are participating in recreation programs without parents for the first time. Afterschool activities and “Parents Night Out” are just a few of the offerings.
Young Achievers Tween and Teen Scene for children ages 13 – 18: Programs focus on socialization. Popular events include typical teenage activities such a themed dances, sports clubs, and social groups.
Young Achievers Transition Programs are for young adults ages 18 – 21: Programs focus on preparing older teenagers for adult life. Social opportunities are offered that foster independence as well as programs designed to help young adults ready themselves for life after school.
Many of The Arc’s programs and special events may serve more than one age group. For example, ”Parents Night Out” is open to all children ages 5 – 18. Information on specific programs will be provided upon registration.
