The Arc of Essex County's Stepping Stones School is a licensed private school for preschoolers and children up to age 10 with intellectual or developmental disabilities. Individualized instruction and therapies based on the child's Individualized Education Plan (IEP)assist in the development of cognitive, social, physical and communication skills. This is accomplished with the expertise of over 90 trained professional staff and volunteers who work together toward clearly defined student goals.

Transitioning from school to adult services typically begins around the age of 16 for most individuals with developmental disabilities. As a student begins to prepare for their adult life, The Arc of Essex County's Transition Services can support and enhance the school's transition plan. Our services include:

  • Creation of an individualized transition service plan
  • An Arc of Essex County representative at the transition IEP meeting for continuity into our adult day services.
  • Sampling Arc of Essex County adult day service while still in school with a modified schedule
  • Supplemental evening and weekend transition classes for the student such as: social skills for the adult world, independent living skills, self-advocacy

The Arc of Essex County's Camp Hope offers an extended school year program. Under the direction of our camp director as well as a certified special education teacher, the camper's day is designed to meet some of the IEP goals through a once daily academic period and integrated traditional camp activities. Tuition is provided by the sending school district.
