Expect More

The service provider of choice for individuals with IDD, their families and community, we welcome the opportunity to show you that when it comes to your provider you should expect more. Everyone deserves the best, and we deliver on that expectation each and every day.

What We Do

After-Work Respite Program Returns

The After-Work Respite Program is a community integration program for adults that allows caregivers to take the time they need to relieve stress, restore energy, and manage family life. Attendees to After-Work Respite sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays enjoy a variety of activities, including arts and crafts, music, dancing, and community trips. A light dinner is also included. The sessions run from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Opportunity Zone in Maplewood, and transportation home is provided within The Arc’s catchment area.

New Global Studies Curriculum Launches

Participants in The Arc of Essex County’s Day Programs are learning about cultures around the world through a new global studies curriculum. Featuring activities that focus on different cultures, the lessons explore the traditions of art, music, cuisine, and holidays celebrated in a variety of cultures. The discoveries and activities are now part of their daily schedule, and include special guest speakers with roots in cultures across the globe.

Tell Congress: Support the SSI Savings Penalty Elimination Act NOW!

The Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program provides critical support for millions of people with disabilities to be able to afford necessities like food and rent. But it has many rules that make it hard for people to save money and get out of poverty. SSI has an asset limit that has not been updated since 1989. Assets include money in bank accounts, retirement accounts, and savings. Asset limits of $2,000 (or $3,000 for married couples) mean that people cannot save money and force people with disabilities into poverty. Urge your U.S Senators to support people with disabilities and their families by cosponsoring the bipartisan SSI Savings Penalty Elimination Act (S.4102), which would raise these asset limits.
