March was a month full of excitement and learning at Stepping Stones School, as students and staff started making memories at their new building in Fairfield.

The students celebrated reading in many ways during Read Across America Week, listening to stories read by parents, siblings, and friends who visited as guest readers. They also had fun dressing up for special spirit days, including crazy hair day and international day.

On March 15, students from the Deron School visited Stepping Stones and helped the children create St. Patrick’s Day themed wooden crafts and coloring pages together.

Stepping Stones students also celebrated World Down Syndrome Day on March 21, wearing colorful socks and ribbons and enjoying a special visit from Eyes of the Wild, a wildlife education program that brought live animals to the school. The students were amazed by the animals and learned about their habitats.

Students and staff are now settled in at their new school building, with teachers reporting a smooth transition for the children as they became acquainted with their new classrooms and therapy rooms. The bright and spacious rooms are now filled with colorful art by students, and the Early Intervention programs are running regularly in the new space.

The Arc of Essex County’s Stepping Stones School is a Department of Education approved private school for students with disabilities serving children ages 3-10. The school, based in Fairfield, NJ, is designed to meet the developmental and educational needs of children with cognitive impairments such as Down syndrome and other students with similar educational and developmental needs.
