Navigating through the Individualized Education Program (IEP) process can seem overwhelming, but The Arc of New Jersey is here to help. The Arc has partnered with Hinkle, Prior & Fischer to offer free IEP reviews for families who have questions or concerns about their child's IEP. The session will take place at The Arc of Essex County’s main office (123 Naylon Ave, Livingston) from 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, February 28. Arc Recreation Hosts a Self-Care Retreat and Goes to the Movies

During the month of January, participants in The Arc of Essex County’s Adult Recreation and Community Inclusion program enjoyed a retreat at Studio Arc, a trip to the movies, and weekly bowling excursions. For the Self Care Retreat at Studio Arc on January 8, participants focused on “A Healthy Me in 2023,” learning about good nutrition, the benefits of exercise and a good night’s sleep, and discovering ways to protect themselves and others from illness. Family Survey on Resources for IDD and Dementia

The National Task Group on Intellectual Disabilities and Dementia Practices (NTG) is undertaking an initiative to expand the available information on dementia for families, agencies, and others and is reaching out to family and other caregivers to help better understand where they get their information and what information might be of most use to them. The NTG developed a brief 15-item survey with questions tapping some key areas related to information and its access. SYA Sings Along at Caroling Event

Singers from the United Presbyterian Church of Lyndhurst visited The Arc of Essex County’s SYA Day Program in December, where program participants led their peers in a cheerful singalong session of holiday carols. From Jingle Bells to Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree to Silent Night, three singers and a melodica player from United Presbyterian led a series of favorite holiday tunes, which the day program attendees thoroughly enjoyed. Studio Arc Artisans Create Winter Wellness Kits

A group of talented Studio Arc artisans spent the autumn months creating Winter Wellness Kits, using their craftmaking and Cricut skills to assemble beautiful boxes packed with homemade self-care items. Six women from the Opportunity Zone day program in Maplewood made weekly visits to Studio Arc to craft handmade soaps, lip balms, linen/room sprays, bath salts, and sugar scrubs infused with essential oils. The decorated boxes also included cards of encouraging affirmations as stated by the artisans themselves. A Festive Season of Holiday Celebrations for Stepping Stones Students

With activities and celebrations for Hanukkah, Las Posadas, Christmas, Kwanzaa, and New Year's, the students at Stepping Stones School had a busy December packed with festive fun. On December 9, students from The Deron School of New Jersey visited Stepping Stones for their annual gathering. In addition to playing fun games and activities, the Deron and Stepping Stones students completed a craft together -- a cute wooden snowmen for each of the children to take home.
