Volunteers Bring Green Thumbs to Arc Group Homes

For more than a decade, Al Ianacone and Susan Langler have been bringing beauty, nutrition, and flavor to the Arc group homes by planting gardens for residents, and this year was no exception. With the help of Susan’s husband Frank, the group installed gardens at Cedar Grove and Linden group homes and the Claremont Apartments, planting several types of tomatoes, basil, cucumbers, broad-leaf parsley, and marigolds. Donating their time, skills, and plants, the trio carefully prepared the soil, planted the seedlings, and watered the gardens, and in the coming days they plan to put down some special powder to repel rabbits [...]

Arc Spotlight: Clinton

In 2023, Clinton moved into his own apartment in The Arc of Essex County’s Park Place Apartment Program in Irvington, and in the year since, he’s enjoyed a balance of personal autonomy and staff support. “It’s my first time living on my own and it’s been great,” he says. Clinton, who is 33 years old, is active in various sports leagues and has regular visits with family. He is currently looking for a job, and travels to his activities and appointments using public transit. Anitra Wilson Retires from The Arc of Essex County

After nearly 50 years of employment and a variety of roles in the agency, Anitra Wilson has retired from The Arc of Essex County. Anitra was 19 years old when she first started working in The Arc’s Home Assistance Program (HAP) after seeing an ad in the newspaper in 1974. Soon after, she was promoted to childcare specialist. She has been on The Arc team over the decades since, most recently working as Safety Manager for the Transportation and Property Management department. Scholarship Opportunity Now Available

Rock the 21, a New Jersey-based nonprofit and supporter of The Arc of Essex County, is bringing back its “Rockin’ Scholar” Scholarship Program for people with Down syndrome. The organization’s mission is to raise awareness about Down syndrome, encourage inclusion of people with Down syndrome and to provide support and services for people with Down syndrome and their families. The scholarship program started in 2023 to help finance higher education and/or employment training for people with Down syndrome. Act Now: Advocate for Increased FY25 Budget Funding for People with IDD

An Action Alert from The Arc of New Jersey: Tell the Senate President, Assembly Speaker and Budget Committee Chairs that we need to fund the following priorities in the FY25 Budget: Waiting List - The Governor included enough money to move 400 people off the List. We need $13 million more to move an additional 200 individuals, bringing the total to 600 people off the Waiting List in FY25.  DSPs - The Budget must include $42 million in the FY25 Budget to increase DSP wages by $1.25 an hour. Studio Arc and Stepping Stones School Team Up for Earth Day

In honor of Earth Day, Day Program participants at Studio Arc gathered broken old crayons and melted them to create new crayons, and then delivered them to Stepping Stones School for a coloring session together. A group of seven Day Program participants visited the school on April 22, stopping first at the Preschool classroom, then Transition Kindergarten, and then the Primary classroom. At each stop, the adult consumers sat down with students in the class and colored Earth Day-themed pages together. The Arc of Essex County Raises Over $70,000 at the 26th Annual Building Tomorrows Event

Under sunny skies and with cherry blossoms in bloom, hundreds of runners and walkers gathered at the Clipper Pavilion in West Orange for The Arc of Essex County’s 26th Annual Building Tomorrows 5K Run, Family Walk, and Fun Fest on Saturday, April 27, 2024. The event, which raised more than $70,000 for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the greater Essex County area, also featured a Fun Fest with games and activities for all ages. Job Club Begins Restaurant Training

Members of the Job Club at West Caldwell Hub began their six-week prevocational training at The Office Tavern & Grill in East Hanover as part of a partnership between The Arc of Essex County and the 40 North Restaurant Group. Five WCHUB day program participants attended their first training session at The Office on April 25, where they received uniform shirts and tied on restaurant aprons before taking notes on the types of tasks they might be asked to complete in a restaurant setting. New Classes for Children and Teens at Studio Arc

During the month of April, a variety of new classes at Studio Arc were launched for children and teens with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Running through the end of June, Animal Yoga and Tumble Ninjas take place from 4 to 5 p.m. on alternating Tuesdays at Studio Arc for children ages 6 to 12. In the Animal Yoga classes, which started on April 2, young yogis learn simple animal and nature poses to stretch, move, and calm their bodies and minds.
