Volunteers Cultivate Joy and Growth in Group Home Gardens

This spring, a trio of dedicated volunteers—Al Ianacone, Susan Langner, and Frank Langner—continued their tradition of preparing gardens at The Arc’s Cedar Grove, Washington Avenue, and Bloomfield group homes, where they planted a variety of herbs, vegetables, and flowers.

Armed with gardening tools and a passion for The Arc mission, the volunteers spent hours preparing garden beds, planting basil, parsley, cucumbers, tomatoes, and colorful blooms. Al and Susan, both certified Master Gardeners, brought their expertise to the task, ensuring that each garden was not only beautiful but also functional. The gardens are interactive spaces that engage Arc residents and staff alike. While the volunteers return every few weeks throughout the growing season to weed and maintain the gardens, the day-to-day care is lovingly handled by the residents and staff. Watering the plants has become a shared responsibility and a source of pride for those living in the homes. Beyond the joy of gardening, the harvests from these plots will soon find their way into home-cooked meals.

The Arc of Essex County extends heartfelt thanks to Al, Susan, and Frank for more than a decade of enriching the lives of residents through their green-thumb generosity.
