Fall Fun at Stepping Stones School

October was a month full of energy, learning, and community spirit at Stepping Stones School.

In recognition of Fire Safety Awareness Month, the Fairfield Fire Department paid a special visit to the school on October 15. Firefighters gave an engaging presentation on fire safety, including showing children what a fully dressed firefighter looks like (and how they may look intimidating at first, but they’re there to help!) and how to act in a fire emergency. In the parking lot, the firefighters allowed the children to explore the FFD fire engine up close and even try on some of the equipment.

The school also welcomed students and staff from the Deron School on October 17 for a collaborative fall-themed crafting, coloring, and games session.

On October 24, students across all classes came together to celebrate Down Syndrome Awareness Month with “Team Time” fun. The event featured relays that had everyone cheering each other on as they completed activities such as scooting, tossing beanbags, balancing, and placing their handprints on an easel. Children also wore blue and yellow and cheered with blue and yellow pom-poms, as part of Down Syndrome recognition.

To cap off the month, students dressed in their Halloween best for an indoor “Trunk or Treat.” The all-purpose room was transformed with decorated tables hosted by Stepping Stones and Arc Main Office staff, as well as school families. The students enjoyed dancing to seasonal music, collecting treats, and showing off their costumes during the festive celebration.

The Arc of Essex County’s Stepping Stones School is a Department of Education-approved private school for students with disabilities.  Located in Fairfield, NJ, the school is designed to meet the developmental and educational needs of children with cognitive impairments such as Down syndrome and other students with similar educational and developmental needs.  For more information, or to request a virtual tour and assistance with an out-of-district placement, call (862) 210-8781.
