Hiyas from The Arc of Essex County’s SYA Day Program was recognized for her artistic talent this fall, when her “Milagros” art piece, created at Studio Arc, was featured on the cover of the Supportive Housing Association of New Jersey conference program and notebook.

“I’m so excited,” Hiyas said when she received her own copy of the notebook with her art featured on the cover. “I’m very happy about it and I can’t wait to draw in the book.” In addition to receiving her own copy of the notebook, Hiyas also received a gift card from SHA NJ as the art-contest winner.

The SHA NJ conference was held in November and featured Arc representation, including Senior Director of Asset Management Frank Cinque, who moderated one of the panels. A major annual gathering for professionals, advocates, and participants in the supportive-housing sector, the event highlights not only innovation and best practices but also the voices and creative contributions of individuals in the community, including Hiyas.

Studio Arc provides participants like Hiyas with opportunities to explore their artistic abilities, develop new skills, and share their work with a wider audience. Through Studio Arc, Hiyas has honed her craft, and her artwork hasn’t just been featured at the SHA NJ Conference; she also has had several pieces auctioned off at Arc fundraising events and at an art show hosted by Matheny Organization art event last year, where she has received the proceeds from the sale of her work.

The Arc of Essex County congratulates Hiyas and celebrates the Studio Arc program that has made all types of creativity possible for program participants of all ages.
