Community Connections Art Classes at Studio Arc

In recent months, Studio Arc has hosted Community Connections, a weekly art class for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities open to the wider community.

This class was intentionally designed for individuals who don’t attend other Arc of Essex County programs but are interested in taking an art class in a welcoming, inclusive environment. Community Connections offers a chance to explore creativity, learn new skills, and build social connections in a relaxed, supportive setting.

Each Friday from 2 to 3:30 p.m., participants gather at the studio for a hands-on art experience led by Creative Arts Manager Debra McGauley-Eichhorn and Creative Arts Supervisor Taiwo Adeyefa. Classes typically begin with a short talk from Deb to introduce the project and spark inspiration, followed by time to dive into creating.

The projects have been imaginative and fun: in December, artists painted festive pine trees, and more recently, they painted playful monsters inspired by Eric Scott and then recreated those designs on canvas tote bags.

Jessica, one of the six or so regular participants, shared simply and sweetly, “I love art and I adore Debra.” Caregiver Kim echoed that enthusiasm, saying the class is “so wonderful, so creative, and Debra brings so much energy.”

Classes are $25 per session and participants may sign up for one class or for all lessons in a given month. Sessions are able to accommodate a wide spectrum of abilities, from independent artists to those with more complex needs. Please note that this class does not provide staffing; participants must attend with their own support person, such as a family member or worker. If you or someone you support is looking for a creative outlet and a chance to connect with others in the community, registration for Community Connections is available at https://arcessex.jotform.com/253075100619955.
