It is with great sadness that The Arc of Essex County announces the passing of Harris Chernin, who died on April 27 at the age of 74.

Born on April 18, 1952, Harris was a longtime member of The Arc family. He lived at the Bloomfield Group Home for more than two decades, beginning in 2002, before moving to the Belmont Group Home in 2025. Over the years, he became a familiar and valued presence within the residential program.

Harris may have been small in stature, but he was known for his strong will and spirited personality. He enjoyed spending time out in the community and, in his earlier years, especially loved being near the water. Harris touched the lives of many staff and fellow residents, leaving a lasting impression on those who knew him.

The Arc of Essex County extends its deepest condolences to Harris’s family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be remembered with warmth and missed by many.
