When a frightening medical emergency unfolded recently at The Arc of Essex County’s SYA Day Program, four staff members immediately sprang into action, relying on their training, working together, and remaining calm when it mattered most.
Their quick response helped save the life of Paul, an SYA participant who experienced a medical emergency while at the program. Mary Harris, Melina Solomon, and Fatmata Sannoh provided critical hands-on assistance, performing back blows and abdominal thrusts. Lexus Archer managed the situation, calling 911 and continuing to give verbal instructions to staff until EMTs arrived. Faced with an incredibly stressful situation, all four staff members stayed focused, worked together, and relied on their training to help Paul.
Thankfully, Paul recovered, and the SYA community recently had the opportunity to come together for a special luncheon, held to recognize the four staff members and thank them for their extraordinary response. One of the most meaningful moments came when Paul was able to personally present each of them with flowers to thank them for being there for him when he needed them most.
This heroic moment was a reminder of the importance of the training, preparation, and dedication that Direct Support Professionals bring to their work every day. Although no one hopes to face an emergency like this, these four staff members demonstrated how important it is to be prepared.
We are incredibly grateful to these four members of the SYA team for their courage, professionalism, and commitment to the people we serve.
