The Arc of Essex County wishes Maureen Murray, outgoing Director of Community Support Services, a wonderful retirement after 44 years with the organization.

“With her hard work, abiding care, and joyful spirit, Maureen has embodied the mission of The Arc of Essex County throughout her career here,” said CEO Linda Lucas. “Although we are happy for her as she starts her retirement, we will certainly miss her at The Arc. Maureen’s passion for her job, devotion to those we serve, and extraordinary relationships with her colleagues have left a lasting legacy at our organization, and we cannot thank her enough for her years of time, talent, and service.”

Maureen started her tenure at The Arc during what she thought would be a one-time summer job at Camp Hope in 1978. That summer led to a full-time position in day services, and Maureen moved through the programs and ranks of the organization over the coming decades, working as a program aide, support specialist, program coordinator, and assistant director. In 2015 she was named Director of Day Services, and two years later she became Director of Community Services, the position from which she retired from last month.

Over the years, Maureen has touched the lives of many. She says she is most proud of her work with self-advocacy, where she was able to develop connections and relationships with consumers and watch them learn to advocate for themselves, “making things happen and making the changes they wanted.”

“When I think about what has kept me here so long, it’s that I’ve always felt supported from the administration,” Maureen said. “And, of course, with consumers and staff, I’ve met so many great people. Although it’s been the same place for so long, there’s always something new and different and interesting. And it’s always been fun.”

The entire Arc family is grateful for Maureen’s decades of service, and we hope she enjoys her well-earned retirement. Thank you, Maureen!
