Funder Highlight: Orange Orphan Society

For decades, The Arc of Essex County has been fortunate to partner with organizations that share its deep commitment to supporting children and families in our community. Among the most steadfast of these partners is the Orange Orphan Society, an organization whose history, mission, and generosity have made a lasting impact on the individuals we serve.

Founded in the 1950s, the Orange Orphan Society was established using proceeds from the sale of property formerly owned by the Newark Orphanage in Orange. Rooted in the legacy of that orphanage, which once served as a safe haven for children, the Society continues its tradition of care by supporting organizations that provide meaningful services to at-risk and economically disadvantaged youth in the Oranges and Maplewood. In the near future, the organization will carry this mission forward under a new name: the Children’s Foundation of the Oranges.

The alignment between the Society’s mission and that of The Arc of Essex County is clear. Both organizations are dedicated to ensuring that children have access to supportive, enriching experiences that help them thrive. Nowhere is this shared vision more evident than in the Society’s longstanding support of Camp Hope.

Camp Hope offers a unique environment where children and adults with IDD can enjoy social and recreational opportunities in a caring, inclusive setting. As the Orange Orphan Society notes, Camp Hope “makes it possible for its participants to transcend the challenges they face… and enjoy and make the most of their time together.”

The Society’s partnership with The Arc dates back to the 1970s, making The Arc one of its longest-standing grantees. Over the years, the Society has helped cover operational costs, funded camperships, and contributed to critical capital improvements, including a pool renovation completed at a time when government funding was unavailable for such projects.

This enduring commitment is a true partnership grounded in shared values and a mutual dedication to the well-being of local children. The Orange Orphan Society takes pride in helping sustain “rare and valuable services” like Camp Hope, ensuring that generations of young people in the Oranges and Maplewood have opportunities to grow, connect, and thrive. The Arc of Essex County is deeply grateful for the Orange Orphan Society’s decades of support.
