Self-Advocacy Group Honored for Video

Participants in The Arc of Essex County’s Self-Advocacy Club finished in second place in the New Jersey Self-Advocacy Project (NJSAP) video contest and were celebrated at the group’s annual luncheon in April. The video, in which three Arc Day Program consumers share what self-advocacy means to them, was part of a contest sponsored by NJSAP in honor of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month in March. The group’s video secured dozens of votes via social media “likes,” and participants were pleased with their silver-medal finish. Staff Spotlight: Toshonda Johnson-Hall

In 1998, Toshonda Johnson-Hall was working as a Payless store manager when residents from one of The Arc of Essex County’s group homes stopped in to buy new shoes. Toshonda began chatting with the residential staff and soon learned about The Arc’s day programs. With three young children at home, she was interested in a different working schedule, but she also was inspired by watching the dynamic between The Arc staff and consumers and thought the day program might be a good fit for her. Montclair Group Home and Camp Hope Receive Generous Grants

The Arc of Essex County is grateful to announce the recent awarding of two grants that will support adults and children with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Arc programs. The Wallerstein Foundation for Geriatric Life Improvement granted $9,250 to The Arc’s Washington Avenue group home in Montclair, which will be used to purchase and install a sump pump and French drain for the residence. The Lillian Schenck Foundation granted $4,000 for Camp Hope’s 2024 season and its fee-assistance project. Important Social Security Updates

Sharing an important update from The Arc of New Jersey: The Social Security Administration (SSA) has released important new updates that will affect current and future Social Security beneficiaries. First, the SSA announced a significant reduction in the automatic overpayment recovery burden, from 100% to 10% (or $10, whichever is greater). When a person has been overpaid by the SSA, which can sometimes go on for months or years before the person is notified by SSA, the law requires SSA to reclaim those funds, often creating significant financial hardship for an individual and their family. Studio Arc Welcomes Renowned Artist Gina Beavers

On March 26, Studio Arc had the honor of hosting Gina Beavers, a New Jersey-based artist who has shown her work in special exhibits at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and other prestigious venues. She is known for her realistic and textured paintings and sculptures that often depict everyday objects, food, and social media images. Artists from all four Arc Day Programs had recently completed paintings and collages, which featured mouths, eyes, and food items and were inspired by Beavers. Teams Coming Together for 26th Annual Building Tomorrows on April 27

More than 20 teams have already signed up for The Arc of Essex County’s 26th Annual Building Tomorrows 5K Run, Family Walk, and Fun Fest, which is coming up on Saturday, April 27. A Marvelous March at Stepping Stones School

March was a month full of excitement and learning at Stepping Stones School, as students and staff started making memories at their new building in Fairfield. The students celebrated reading in many ways during Read Across America Week, listening to stories read by parents, siblings, and friends who visited as guest readers. They also had fun dressing up for special spirit days, including crazy hair day and international day. On March 15, students from the Deron School visited Stepping Stones and helped the children create St. Patrick’s Day themed wooden crafts and coloring pages together. New Children and Teen Classes at Studio Arc this Spring

Animal Yoga, Tumbling Ninjas, and Teen Jam Band are among the new classes scheduled for The Arc of Essex County’s youngest participants at Studio Arc this spring. Offered on Tuesday afternoons, Animal Yoga will allow young yogis, ages 6 to 12, to learn simple animal and nature poses to stretch, move, and calm their bodies and minds. The Candle Lighters’ “Baskets 4 Buddies” Event Raises $30K for Stepping Stones

On March 24, the Hanover Manor was filled with excitement and generosity as more than 250 people attended the "Baskets 4 Buddies" tricky tray and raffle event organized by The Candle Lighters. The Candle Lighters are a group of dedicated volunteers who raise funds and awareness for The Arc of Essex County's Stepping Stones School and Early Intervention programs, which serve children with intellectual and developmental disabilities from birth to age 10.
