Amazing Spaces: Creating enhanced sensory experiences for children and adults with IDD

Spring Appeal Success

The Arc of Essex County is deeply grateful to everyone who contributed to the 2025 Spring Appeal, including those who gave on June 11, The Arc’s “Day of Giving.” Donors’ generous support helped unlock a generous $5,000 matching grant from Rock the 21 as well as $12,000 from anonymous donors—amplifying the impact of every dollar raised. These contributions will help expand and enhance sensory spaces across our Arc program centers and at Stepping Stones School, supporting children and adults with Down syndrome and other intellectual and developmental disabilities throughout our programs. Such spaces are vital for promoting comfort, focus, and well-being for [...]

He also recently started attending After-Work. Isaiah’s favorite activity is playing games with his peers on the Obie interactive table, though he also enjoys bowling and going out to eat chicken and rice during community lunch on Fridays. He says he loves “school” (which is what he calls his day program), and has a lot of fun when he’s there. When asked about his family, [...]

Arc Staff In Focus: Sara Fermo, Operation Coordinator Children and Family Services

Staff Spotlight: Sara Fermo

Sara Fermo spent years at home raising her three children, regularly volunteering at her kids’ schools. When she decided to return to the workforce in 2015, instead of returning to retail work, she was drawn to jobs that would allow her to continue working with little ones. Soon enough, she was hired in administration at Stepping Stones School, and immediately knew she had found her place. “I just fell in love with the kids there,” she says. She worked at Stepping Stones for a couple of years before she started getting pulled to The Arc’s main office—first twice a week, then increased [...]
